
Program Overview
students graduate from Mercy High School with a design portfolio for college. The college preparatory curriculum includes intensive and extensive multimedia instruction and presentation for the serious art student both in and
out of the classroom. Student are accepted into the WITA program on the basis of a portfolio submission at the time
of application to Mercy High School. Incoming freshmen students who join WITA are fast-tracked into one semester of Intermediate Art and Intermediate Ceramics following the completion of a 10-day Art Workshop the summer before enrollment.
Benefits of WITA
Students are exposed to rich art community in San Francisco and the Bay Area which allows them to develop their own quality art portfolio for college application. Some of the benefits WITA students enjoy include:
• Museums & Galleries: Field trips to area museums and galleries take place after school or on weekends. Students also design an annual art show of their own work in early spring at Mercy’s McAuley Art Gallery.
• Internships: Visual Arts teachers partner with local galleries, museums and private organizations to identify internship opportunities with a visual arts focus.
• College Links: Visits from college representatives and artists in residence includes critiques and guidance of student’s work. Visits from top U.S. College art departments and Universities are hosted annually specifically for WITA students.
• Scholarships: Funding is available to WITA students for participation in local pre-college summer art programs.
• Artists & Artist Studios: Opportunities to meet local artists and learn more about their artwork as well as careers in art are offered from October to November each year.
• Art Angels: Mentor artists assist with workshops as well as work individually with one to two WITA students during their enrollment at Mercy High School
• Community Service: In conjunction with our Christian Services office, WITA students volunteer with area organizations to provide visual arts in
the community.
• Student Portfolio: Students create quality portfolios for college applications.
• Advance Placement Studio Art: WITA students take one or more courses in drawing, 2D design, and 3D design during their junior and/or senior year.

Requirements
Summer before 9th grade: WITA Art Workshop
9th Grade: One semester each of intermediate art and ceramics
10th Grade: One semester of either intermediate art or ceramics. WITA students may elect to take two intermediate level courses.
