Course Description:

This is a language immersion course designed to allow students in upper level Spanish courses, or native speakers taking French, to practice their Spanish language skills in a Latin country. It also offers many opportunities for students interested in biology, geology, and physics to see and experience, first hand, many of the things you have only read about or seen on television. We’ll explore an active volcano and the surrounding eco system where you’ll experience the awesome power of nature as well as the splendid flora and fauna that thrive in this region. We’ll also venture to a lush and beautiful tropical rain forest! Rain forests all over the world are diminishing and these delicate eco systems are disappearing at an alarming rate. Thanks to Costa Rica’s strict laws protecting their forests, you will get to see some of the beautiful and rare plants, insects, birds, and animals that have flourished in this region. We’ll also spend a couple of days in the historic capital of San Jose where you’ll have the opportunity to get a glimpse into the everyday life of a Costa Rican in the bustling metropolis, as well as enjoy some shopping downtown. There is a possibility we will be visiting the Presidential House and perhaps even meet with current President and former Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias!

Some of the excursions we will take will be a hike to Fortuna Waterfall, a visit to an eco center, a relaxing evening at Tabacón natural hot springs, a guided walk through the rain forest, a tour of a chocolate plantation, and a “canopy” tour where you fly above the tree tops on zip wires! This course is a great mix of science, culture, language immersion, and adventure!

Requirements: This is designed to be a language immersion course for Spanish students at the upper course levels. By the 07-08 school year, students must be taking Spanish at the Spanish III level or above or be a native Spanish speaker. Native speakers not taking Spanish will be required to pass a proficiency exam in order to be considered for this course. The exam is to determine if you are at the Spanish III level. Please inquire with one of the chaperones if you are interested in taking the exam so that you may be considered for this course. Participants will need to have a valid passport and be able to leave the country with written consent by a parent or legal guardian. Also, due to the physical nature of some of the excursions, you must be able to walk, hike, and climb for extended periods of time. Ability to swim and comfort with heights is preferred but not required. Any students meeting these requirements, regardless of grade level, are free to apply.

All course participants will be required to turn in a 3-5 page typed report (in English) of fact and information on the country of Costa Rica. Upon completing the course, you must turn in a 2-3 page typed report (in Spanish) on your experience.

A valid passport is required for this course. Proof of passport or passport application is due by December 6, 2007
