During their junior year, students begin planning their “Culminating Service Project.” This project calls upon upper-classwomen to tap into their interests and talents, and create goal-oriented projects that serve disadvantaged people and/or address social justice issues. Examples include: offering a cooking class to low-income senior citizens, instituting a recycling program at a camp, offering a “book-club” to inner-city children, developing an educational or fundraising campaign for a needy population, etc. Students may work individually, in pairs or in small groups.
Culminating Service project expectations:
- Students will work closely with a faculty mentor throughout their project.
- With the help of the community service coordinator, students will identify a non-profit organization through which they will offer their project.
- The project will involve at least 14 hours in direct contact with people.
- Students will implement the project during second semester junior year, the summer between junior and senior years, or, in rare circumstances, in the first semester senior year.
- Students, whether working individually or with others, will write a separate reflection about the project.
- Student(s) will create a display or make a presentation about the project.
Some members of the Classes of 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 were pioneers in this new community service structure that includes a Culminating Service Project. Please click here to read about them and their projects.
