Students in Tifi Ak Tifi (our Haitian Club) raised $300 on Jan. 19 to support a lunch program in Gros Morne, Haiti, the community Mercy serves on the annual Haiti Immersion trip. Money was raised from the sale of Tpumps as well as donations from students, faculty and staff.
As senior Adela Pineda announced on Skipper TV, this program provides a lunch of rice and beans to children at Lekòl Jezi-Mari (Jesus and Mary School) in Gros Morne. Many of these children do not always have food at home to eat, so the lunch program assures they have at least one healthy meal during the day.
Mercy students participating in the Haiti Immersion for this year's Intersession will have the opportunity to visit the school. On past trips, students have distributed lunches to the children and seen first-hand the value of this program.
The husband of a member of Focus on Haiti (the Mercy organization that helps the Gros Morne community and plans our Immersion trips) was so impressed by the students' fundraising efforts that he has offered to match the amount, increasing the money raised to $600!
