Give to Mercy Online

Cash

Personal checks, credit card debits (VISA, MC and AMEX) and cash are welcomed forms of giving. Gifts in cash result in income tax deductions. If you itemize your tax deductions, gifts of cash may be deducted in amounts up to 50% of your adjusted gross income.

Establish a Scholarship

Funding a perpetual scholarship is a wonderful way to memorialize your family or a loved one. A minimum gift of $5,000 will name a scholarship.

Pledges

Consider giving through a pledge, whereby a promised gift is made through payments over an extended period of time. The donor commits to a specific dollar amount that will be paid in installments according to a fixed schedule. Pledge payments may be made by check, cash, credit card (Visa, MC and AMEX), and/or gifts of securities, real estate, etc.

The advantage of pledging for many is that the donor is able to give a larger gift over time, rather than making a smaller one time gift.

Increase Your Gift through Matching Funds

Many employers match their employees' gifts to non-profits. Some match the gifts of retired employees. Check with your employer to see if they participate in matching programs. Below is a list of companies who have matched donor gifts to Mercy: Amgen, Bank of America, Barclays, Chevron, Clorox, Kaiser Permanente, Levi Strauss, Macy's,  PG & E, Visa, and Wells Fargo.

Transfer of Stock, Real Estate or Personal Property

Gifts of appreciated securities or real and personal property, which have been held for at least a year, represent significant tax advantages for the donor, and provide valuable help to Mercy. Such gifts are generally valued at the fair market price at the time of donation. Federal capital gains taxes are bypassed for the donor and non-existent for Mercy due to its tax status. The donor's financial advisor or tax consultant is best prepared to explain the benefits of these types of gifts.

Estate Gifts

Providing for Mercy through a bequest can benefit the school in the future. There can be many favorable tax consequences associated with this type of gift. A donor considering an estate gift should consult an attorney or tax advisor for more definitive information.

Gifts of Life Insurance

If you own life insurance policies that have built-up cash value but may no longer be needed for their original purposes, such policies can make convenient tax-deductible charitable gifts. Policies that are paid up may be deductible for their approximate replacement value.

Gifts through Charitable Trusts

There are numerous trust instruments which allow donors to retain income while transferring ownership of assets. The donor places an asset (cash, stock, real estate, rental property) irrevocably into a charitable trust. The donor retains a lifetime right to the income the asset produces. Mercy receives the principal upon the death of income beneficiaries. The donor receives lifetime income from the trust, gets an immediate income tax deduction, bypasses capital gains tax on the sale of appreciated property, avoids estate tax, as well as providing for a good cause during the donor's lifetime. With the help of an appropriate advisor, the donor can determine whether a gift made in this way serves the donor's personal estate planning needs. Consult with your legal and/or tax advisor.

Gifts Through Retirement Plans

Whether a person participates in a company retirement plan or a fund established by himself, such as an Individual Retirement Plan, he may feel he has accumulated funds that are now worth more than will be needed for the comfortable support of himself and loved ones. If you are over the age of 59.5, for example, and have traditional retirement accounts, you may wish to make withdrawals sufficient to fund your charitable gifts. You report the income on your tax return and take a corresponding deduction for your gift. This will generally result in a wash for tax purposes and allow you to utilize extra retirement funds in a way that assures they will, in effect, never be subject to gift, estate or income taxes. This may be an easy and convenient way to make a gift to Mercy. Consult with your legal and/or tax advisor.
