Click here to read an introduction to the life and work of the poet, Walt Whitman (you'll need to scroll down a bit until you see the heading, "Introduction").  Then, read over your assigned poem(s) and answer the following questions:

  • What is the mood of the poem(s)?

  • What is Whitman describing/writing about?

  • How does the poem connect to Whitman's life and experiences?

  • Pick 3-4 possible term-paper topics from the list located here.  We will select topics next class.

Read the article, How Can I Call This My Home? by Lee Chew (1903).  Pay special attention to the following:

  • Why did Mr. Chew come to the United States?

  • What kinds of jobs did he find when he first arrived?

  • What were some of the "typical" jobs for Chinese immigrants?  Why were they limited to this kind of work?

  • What is the "myth" of the Chinese laundry?

Read the article on the case of Dover v. Kitzmiller here and take notes:  How did the federal judge in Pennsylvania rule in this case?  What had the U.S. Supreme Court previously ruled about teaching creationism in the classroom?  What parallels do you see to the Scopes Trial?

Read the article on the case of Jose Padilla here, and write a 1-2 paragraph reflection:  Why was Mr. Padilla arrested and held?  For how long was he held?  Is this constitutional?  Do you see any parallels between the case of Mr. Padilla and the Red Scare of the 1950s?  Be specific! Thursday, 5/8
Read the excerpt from Robert F. Kennedy's "Thirteen Days" and take notes (you can do this on the handout itself).  Who are the main players in the conflict?  What is the atmosphere like at the White House?  What is ultimately at stake?  Note:  You can take notes on the handout itself -- bullet points are fine.
