I am excited to be teaching AP Biology next year and am looking forward to having you in my class!
In order to cover the required material for the Advanced Placement Biology course it is essential that summer reading cover some of the concepts that are difficult to reach in the regular term.
The assigned chapters have been selected because they are less difficult and lend themselves to self-paced instruction. You will need to go our library and pick up your textbook (it weighs 7 lbs!). Please pick up your book NEXT WEEK. The textbook is Biology, 7th Edition by Campbell and Reese. There is a CD-Rom that comes with the book (in the back cover - please be careful with it, do not lose it). The CD-Rom has activities that go along with each chapter and quizzes. Please let me know if you DO NOT have computer or internet access over the summer - I will get you hard copies instead. |
***The "Ch 1 Guided Reading Assignment" is due on the first day of school. ***The "Study Guide" Questions for Ch 2 & 3, Ch 4 & 5 are due on the first day of school. ***There will be a TEST on the summer material the first week of school. |
| You will need to cover the following FIVE chapters over the summer // |
Ch 1: Exploring Life Ch 2: The Chemical Context of Life Ch 3: Water and the Fitness of the Environment Ch 4: Carbon and the Molecular Diversity of Life Ch 5: The Structure and Function of Macromolecules |
Please do the following sequence for each chapter // |
(I will not be collecting it all, but it is important to do so you can answer the handout questions) - take the "Pre-Test" on the CD-Rom or website - read the "Study Guide Questions" on the handouts - read the chapter - read the "Summary of Key Concepts" at the end of the chapter - answer the "CH 1 Guided Reading" and "Study Guide Questions" (for Ch 2 & 3, Ch 4 & 5) (each answer should be a thorough explanation in your OWN WORDS) - review the chapter and take any additional notes as necessary (these will be helpful later on) - take the "Self-Quiz" at the end of the chapter - take the "Chapter Quiz" on the CD-Rom or website - go back an re-read any sections that you didn't do well on |
