Beginning Ceramics B
Ceramic Drape Mask
1. Internet Assignment – Part #1
As a class, go to the Computer Lab and complete your Internet assignment. Fill out the chart on five different masks in class. This chart will be checked off during class.
2. Internet Assignment – Part #2
The next step of your Internet assignment is to select one mask. Save information on your disk. Be sure to save a picture of your mask. This part of the assignment might have to be completed as homework.
3. In class, draw some simple sketches of your mask ideas. You might want to look at your photos. Remember to consider different elements of artistic style and contemporary trends in your sketches.
4. In small groups, review your sketches and help each other decide which one you will draw out as a “blueprint” for your mask.
5. Using graph paper, pencil, compass/protractor, and ruler, draw out the parts of your mask. Be sure to figure out the size of each part before drawing on graph paper. These will become your pattern pieces for your mask.
6. Roll out slabs of clay and use your pattern pieces that you created on the graph paper to cut out your slabs. Refer to your original sketch to follow your design. Be sure to include some way to hang your mask when you are constructing the project.
7. Cover your piece tightly with plastic and keep edges that are still being worked on moist with strips of wet paper towel. When you have completed your project, cover it with plastic so that your project dries out slowly and does not crack.
8. Your mask should be fired and decorated using underglazes. You will want to detail your mask to reflect its function (purpose).
9. Written evaluation – Each student will write a statement concerning the following aspects of their mask:
- the function
- the construction technique
- the surface quality
- the symbolic quality
- the expressive quality
This written evaluation must be completed by:____________________________________________
