Beginning Ceramics A
Slab
Constructed Form Instructions
(Box, Luminaria, Name or Address Plaque)
Slab Constructed
Forms – Each student will construct one of the three slab-constructed
forms. The form can be a box, a luminaria,
or a name/address plaque. You must include some type of
texture (drawn or pressed into the clay) on your slab-constructed form.
Review your handout on slab construction.
- The box must be at least 5 inches in
height and have a fitted lid
- The luminaria must be at least 5 inches in width, have a base, and cutouts. A dome shaped luminaria must be 5 inches in width.
- The cylinder must be at least 5 inches in height.
- The name/address plaque must be at least 10 inches, have a way to be hung, and have a theme.
You are to make one slab constructed form. You may select which of the three projects to complete.
1.
Roll out slabs of clay using a rolling pin
and two guide sticks.
2. Create paper pattern pieces
if needed to cut out your slabs. Lay pattern pieces on clay slab and cut
out using a
fettling
knife.
3.
Be sure to stamp your texture stamp or do cutouts with stencils on your
slab before you begin assembling
your
project.
4.
Slab pieces should be lightly dried with a blow dryer before assembly so
that the flat pieces of clay will
stand
up and hold their shape. Dry on one side and then turn over onto another board
and dry the backside.
5.
Cover your piece tightly with plastic and keep edges that are still being
worked on moist with strips of wet
paper towel. When you have completed your project, cover it with plastic so
that your project dries out
slowly and does not crack.
Remember:
Joints are potential trouble spots! As the clay shrinks, strains may open what
you thought was a secure seam. Be sure that
the components of your piece are
fastened together securely.
